IT RADIO NETWORK ON THE PROS AND CONS OF INCUBATORS
Incubators. The training ground for spoiled companies or the breeding grounds for the Microsofts of the future?
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA July 14, 2000 -- IT Radio Network, the voice behind eBusiness, is featuring an in-depth spotlight on the world of incubation. The guests in the piece include Jennifer Chrisler of I-Group HotBank, a SOFTBANK Inc. venture division, George Zachary of Mohr Davidow, Ed Black from Aberdeen Group, Tom Nolle of CIMI Corp. and Neil Cohen of campsix.
In the interviews, the guests discussed the pros and cons of incubators, CMGI (Nasdaq: CMGI), ICG (Nasdaq: ICGE) and idealab!, which companies are doing the best and worst jobs and helpful hints for deciding whether or not to go with an incubator.
According to Mohr Davidow General Partner George Zachary, some companies are poised to succeed, while others arent bring much to the table. "The three groups that have been doing a pretty good job are CMGI, ICG and idealab!," said Zachary. "I think the majority of the rest are just saying hey, give me 50% of your equity and well give you $250,000 and you can sit in our offices. Thats not a great deal by any stretch of the imagination."
Ed Black, Aberdeen Group Sr. VP agrees, "If you look at the segmentation in the market, you have some grand-daddies out there. Youve got the CMGIs, you have the Safeguards (NYSE: SFE), you have companies that have been really involved for many years in bringing forward technology and Internet companies. Theyre pretty much the benchmark"
For more information, the entire interviews are available free online in RealAudio (Nasdaq: RNWK) and text at http://www.itradionetwork.com/spot_incubator.cfm.
